Barney, Devon dog rescue, dog rehoming

Barney

This lovely old boy has been with us for many years now. He suffers from extreme anxiety and struggles if his daily routine is upset in any way. He was previously passed from home to home before he arrived with us, and as a result he cannot cope with life in the real world. Barney is well loved in the rescue and is provided with a daily routine he can rely on to help keep his anxieties at bay. He is affectionate and happy with the house pack, and a favourite with our walkers as he’s always up for a cuddle.

Bertie

Young Bertie arrived with us 2 years ago. He had previously been abandoned by his owners and was terrified and lonely in the dog pound. Bertie is the result of poor breeding (common in bulldogs) and has Spina Bifida. This has made him double incontinent, and it takes a lot of work to keep him clean and healthy. Bulldogs are also prone to eye ulcers, which has unfortunately resulted in poor Bertie losing one eye. That said he is in no pain, loves belting around the fields at the rescue and lives to lick the dirty bowls after breakfast or dinner if he gets the chance!

Devon Dog Rescue and Rehabilitation

Blue

Blue came to the rescue a few years ago, when he was taken from an irresponsible owner. The rescue was a lifeline for him to see out his days at the sanctuary, calmly and stress free. Like so many big dogs, Blue needed a safe space to be, and luckily he found one with us.  He’s quite an old gent now but he is still very happy at the centre, loves his daily routine and he’s particularly fond of his walks. He is a very much loved member of our family.

Bruce

Bruce came to us from a local vet, where he had been taken for euthanasia. He had been bought online by a well meaning family who saved him from a life of severe neglect. However, his previous past was unknown and life in a family home with another dog proved too stressful for him. Bruce has bonded with Ruth and his walker in the rescue, but this took time and patience to allow him to decompress. Bruce likes the other dogs, but is deeply mistrustful of unknown humans and it is safe to assume that he had suffered at the hands of his previous owner. He loves the peace and quiet of the sanctuary.

Cookie

Cookie joined us from another rescue many years ago, where she was unfortunately facing destruction as only a young dog. Cookie has always been affectionate with ‘her’ people, but as a guarding breed she was not brought up with the proper boundaries and therefore assumed the role of family protector. She doesn’t have to do that job at the rescue, and as such she enjoys her time with us safely, as the happy girl she was born to be.

George

Big George joined us four years ago, having previously grown up in a world where kindness didn’t exist. George is a gentle giant, sensitive and sweet natured, but in his old life cruelty and punishment were used to turn him into a weapon. It took him a long time to realise that we would not hurt him if he wasn’t fierce to strangers, he couldn’t believe his luck! Now George enjoys his twilight years full of love, cuddles and his very favourite venison sausages.

Harry

Ruth acquired Harry through her role as an expert witness in the courts. Through no fault of his own, Harry had been caught up in a long and expensive legal battle, having been picked up as a stray. Ruth defended Harry in court and then provided a lifeline for him to live out his days at the rescue. Harry is funny, loves to sunbathe, and is a sweet gentle soul who has never done any harm.

Lucy

Lucy (or the Duchess as she is known to us), first graced us with her presence around three years ago. Her ladyship struggles to keep her imperious ways under control in a normal home, resulting in visitors not being allowed in! However, at the rescue she lives in the family pack and is not allowed to become bossy. Lucy thinks all volunteers are her minions, here to serve only her, and has lots of fun flirting with her favourite males and refuses to walk when she feels lazy!

Marley

Marley found himself in trouble in the courts, or rather his extremely troubled owner did. Marley was provided with no security or routine to rely on, and as a result lived a very unhappy life. Consequently he loves his life at the sanctuary as it is always calm and reliable. He has a few insecurities such as a total inability to tolerate the vet! But we work around him and he rewards us by being delighted with his life here. Some dogs just don’t want the complications of modern living.

Reggie

Reggie came to live with us several years ago, and is a good example of the need for a sanctuary space. He has his own kennel, which he chose! He does not enjoy the company of either dogs or people, cannot abide being petted and will bite the culprit that tries! But he does absolutely love going for walks on lead, during which he tries to chase everything that moves and has a great time doing it. A happy boy, loves his routine so long as the slaves (mainly Ruth) provides all he needs then all is well in Reg world.

Rocky

What to say about Rocky? He is the naughty boy of the bunch! He is jealous of the other dogs around Ruth, but gets on well in the pack otherwise. Rocky is always looking for attention, and never tires of belly rubs. He is however prone to nipping the odd human he doesn’t know, unless they give him a gravybone pronto, in which case injury is avoided!

Trevor

This lovely boy is with us because he was let down by an owner who was supposed to care for him for life. Through no fault of his own Trevor is registered as a ‘pitbull type’, and as much is registered to Ruth and will remain so for life. He is sweet natured, lives in the pack and loves Rocky.
